Imagine that in 1999, you fell into some sort of coma that may or may not have been induced by the release of Star Wars: Episode I. Now imagine waking up today. A few things are different: The president-elect of the United States looks a lot different than, say, Martin Van Buren, Will Ferrell is a major motion picture star and both Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera are moms. But none of that would likely be that shocking to you. However, hearing that radio-rockers Third Eye Blind are now major influences on much of the current pop landscape would've likely sent you into a seizure. We're not sayin' 3eb weren't good, we're just sayin' you really couldn't have seen that one comin'. In fact, there are plenty of '90s-era bands you might be surprised to find out still provide influence-whether aesthetically or professionally-to today's artists. --Tim Karan

great list. POD is probably one of the best picks. Without them there is no Christ-core. I just wish more bands would rip off OLP so my favorite band can get some credit.

Great list. I can hardly disagree with anything on that list, although I'm not familiar with the group Self, and I did notice that Radiohead, Nirvanna and U2 are missing. But, other than those minor oversights the list is dead on. In a couple of years you'll be ready to do a list for the 2000's. I'd like to get in my request in now if you don't mind, just make sure the list for the 2000's contains The Killers, My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy and Kongcrete. Those bands are a must if you're going to talk about influence.

Just barely left off the list (probably): Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead, Nirvana, Pavement, Green Day.

Silverchair is easily better than most bands going around these days. This is fact.

remember that this is most SURPRISING influences. U2, Nirvana, Radiohead, and Smashing Pumpkins are all pretty obvious.

Smashing Pumpkins are amazing, but I agree that they would be too obvious. I still listen to POD on occasion and I consider myself priviledged to have the same birth year as PJ's album "Ten"

I think some people are missing the "SURPRISINGLY" portion of the title. With that said, I don't think that it's a surprise that a lot of those bands have been influential, especially Pearl Jam. There were some solid bands on there though. I thought the Counting Crows mention was dead on.

ehhhh.....no offense to the writer, but WHERE THE FUCK IS BLINK 182... they inspired millions of bands! they came out with Buddah, and Chesire cat in the early 90's with no recognition, and then exploded!they went platinum in the 90's with Dude Ranch and Enema....you need to put them in there if your going to include fucking P.O.D.!

Hey there, Dcl1012. Good point! You're not gonna find anyone at AP who would say that Blink-182 weren't one of the most influential acts of the '90s. We covered them then and we still follow everything those guys do now. But the topic of this list was SURPRISINGLY influential bands. These are bands that you might not have thought would still be inspiring bands today. And it was always pretty clear that Blink (and U2, Nirvana, Radiohead and Smashing Pumpkins) would leave lasting impressions. If we created a list of all the bands Blink influenced, it would likely be infinite. Guns+Roses =] ...But what about Green Day/Nirvana/Muse/Blink182 and all those bands
