Alkaline Trio sign to Epitaph; new album out this February

Alternative Press - Scott Heisel on 11/18/09 @ 11:19 AM - altpress.com

Long-running punk three-piece Alkaline Trio have signed with even longer-running punk label Epitaph Records. The band's seventh album will come out via Epitaph and the band's own Heart & Skull imprint this February, although a specific release date and album title are still unavailable.

"This record is a rock record but our punk rock upbringing definitely shines through, more so than our last few records," frontman Matt Skiba said to Spinner. "The vibe is similar to our humble beginnings. It's a step forward but I also think it has glimmers of our past in it."

In the interview with Spinner, Skiba also discloses the record will have 11 tracks, including "The American Scream" and "Dorothy"; it's fair to assume the album will also feature "This Addiction" and "Dine Dine My Darling," which the band played at Riot Fest last month.

Alkaline Trio have been on a number of labels in their decade-plus existence, starting off on local Chicago label Johann's Face for a single before moving to Asian Man Records for what many fans consider to be their classic albums. The group signed with Vagrant in 2000 and released three proper full-lengths and a rarities compilation with the label, before signing to V2 in 2006. When V2 shut its doors in 2007, the band were snatched up by Epic Records, but that partnership quickly soured after only one album, 2008's Agony & Irony.

Mae's van found, gear gone

Alternative Press - Tim Karan on 11/18/09 @ 10:39 AM - altpress.com

According to a message from Mae, their stolen van has been recovered, but more than $100,000 worth of gear was taken. The band had their van and trailer stolen earlier in the month in Philadelphia. They've set up a link where you can donate to help Mae get back on their feet. The band's statement reads: "Our van has been located. That's the good news. The bad news is that over $100,000 in instruments and equipment is still gone. Thank you for all of your support and donations. If you would like to donate, you can do so at this link: http://bit.ly/maedonate."

New Mexican Disaster Squad to reunite for Rad Fest

Alternative Press - Tim Karan on 11/17/09 @ 3:57 PM - altpress.com

New Mexican Disaster Squad--who called it quits in 2008--have revealed that they will reunite for a one-time show at Rad Fest in Wilmington, NC. The event takes place next year on May 14 and 15. In an official statement released by the band, they say that No Friends (featuring three-fourths of NMDS) was still "our hardcore band" and that Virgins and Gatorface (other band projects) will continue to "release shit and play shows." The band also say that NMDS will not be recording any new music together or playing any other shows or tours.

The statement reads: "So maybe calling it a 'hiatus' would probably have been a better move (as this will take place only a year and a half after our official last show), but the four of us have decided to play a one-off show at Rad Fest in Wilmington, North Carolina this coming May (14th and 15th). Don't get us wrong, No Friends is our hardcore band now and Virgins and Gatorface are still going to be releasing shit and playing shows. However, we're all still great friends and saw this festival as an excellent chance to dust-off and bash-out the songs that were such an important part of our lives for almost 10 years. Don't expect any tours or new records. We're not planning on doing any other one-off shows either. Basically if we feel like playing, we will, and we want to right now. This is going to be a really great punk festival in a cool city with a great lineup of bands and that's the main reason we are doing this. Now that all the technical mumbo jumbo is out of the way, we can't wait to see all of your sweaty, smiling faces in Wilmington NC in May!"
