[3.5/5]A lot of the most intricate, ambitious, mind-warping death metal on the planet has come from French-Canadian bands, from Voivod and Gorguts to Neuraxis and Ion Dissonance. Kataklysm are not holding up that tradition. They make music that crushes and pummels the listener, to be sure, but they're way more influenced by hardcore than tech-death. Their riffs are guaranteed to incite a frenzied mosh pit, their lyrics are clearly comprehensible (most of the time) and almost always about crushing one's enemies and/or generally kicking ass. They're way closer kin to Full Blown Chaos than any of their Quebecois peers or forefathers. But that's not a bad thing: Kataklysm know what their fans want, and they provide it every time, right down to beginning their new album with a snippet of tough-man movie dialogue, just like on 2006's In The Arms Of Devastation. If you already like Kataklysm, you'll like Prevail. (NUCLEAR BLAST) Phil Freeman Official Website: http://www.nuclearblastusa.com
