[3.5/5]Lens is an incredibly promising debut of creative melodic hardcore that harkens back to early emo acts like few others. Hostage Calm take obvious but pleasant cues from Rain (the background "ahh"s in "Nosebleed Section"), Dag Nasty and Turning Point (the acoustic intro "In So Many Words..." taking direct inspiration from TP's "Behind This Wall"). Hostage Calm are sure to draw comparisons to now-defunct Connecticut scenemates Ambitions, but they're considerably less cheesy, a bit more diverse and make enlightened social/political observations. Album and song titles like Lens and "Nosebleed Section" are subtle metaphors for being able to disengage ourselves from international crises thanks to the distance. However, "Audible," "Interchangeable Parts" (dig the awesome production tricks here) and "400,000" are tunes that give listeners the ability to fully engage thanks to the serious dynamism, hooks and energy contained within.
